West Side Community Alliance (Sponsor)

The West Side Community Alliance was founded in 2010 by merchants and residents of the West Side in order to improve and revitalize our section of Jersey City. WSCA volunteers work to bring art, culture and a sense of community to the West Side of Jersey City.

WSCA sponsors and supports the Farmers Market at Lincoln Park and many other events.

The Farmers Market at Lincoln Park was founded in 2014 as a way to bring fresh food and a sense of community to the neighborhood. Vendors including Jersey Buzz, Circle Brook Farm, RH Farms and Elios’s Bakery have sold their wares to an eager audience. Programming, including free yoga classes, boot camp, crochet lessons, music and more have been enjoyed as part of the market. The Market has changed over years to suit the neighborhood and is currently located at the West Side and Belmont entrance to the Park, from June through November. WSCA is proud to have led several West Side Avenue cleanups. Volunteers combed West Side Avenue and Duncan Avenue, cleaning and beautifying our major commercial strip. In September 2015, WSCA sponsored The First Annual Chili Cookoff which drew over 250 people in just two hours to sample homemade chili from our area’s aspiring chefs and home cooks. Prizes were awarded for the People’s Choice (popular vote) and the Critic’s Choice (chosen by judges) as to which contestants had the tastiest chili. The Chili Cookoff continues every year. In December 2015, WSCA sponsored the JC West Side Holiday Craft Fair at the Gallo Center in Lincoln Park. Spanning two days, vendors sold gifts from handspun yarn and homemade dog treats, to locally sourced honey and beautiful handmade jewelry to local residents. The Holiday Craft Fair continues every year and has most recently been held at St. Dominic Academy. www.jcwsca.org

Shirley Parcon | Urban Quack JC

About Urban Quack

In 2010 my family and I moved to Jersey City. My kids were young, so I wanted to teach them an important lesson about sustainability and farming. I asked them the age old question "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" This quickly sparked OUR STORYtheir interest. We took a trip to a farm and purchased a dozen eggs. For 21 days, we watched the eggs and waited for them to hatch, and finally three did. We gained popularity around the neighborhood for our small urban farm. We took in rabbits and ducks and continued to raise chickens every year. Now, we have 25+ chickens, 4 ducks, 2 rabbits, 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 1 fish.

We have around 30 chickens and 5 ducks which are all free range. Our beautiful birds are raised with care and love. Urbanquackjc.org

The Barat Foundation | Animodule Sculptures "Newark's Official Peace Ambassadors"

Our Mission: “Public Art by the Public”: Engaging youth and communities in the process of collaborative artistic creation, fostering peacemaking through the arts and promoting the civic ideals of inclusion, diversity, pride of place and the beautification of public space. Our Commitment: “Public Art by the Public” promotes peacemaking through the arts, diversity, inclusion and creative placemaking highlighting a community’s unique history and culture and promoting healing. Our History: Founded by the entrepreneurial couple Chandri and Gary Barat, and later joined by their daughter, Athena Llewellyn, the Barat Foundation has become a pillar of the arts community in Newark, NJ.The Barats left the publicly traded natural foods business they built from scratch upon learning that Gary was facing a life-threatening illness. Embarking on a program of creative recovery, they returned to their creative roots as artists and educators. Beginning as a French language culture and art immersion program for teens in the South of France, they unveiled “Exposure, Experience, Expression”™, a learning methodology rooted in the principles of creative learning. The Barats brought this experience to Newark in 2006 to provide innovative, artistic learning opportunities for urban youth. Highlights: Our Major milestones include the largest collaborative public artwork in the history of Newark; the Peace Mural painted by over 500 children in 14 schools to welcome the Dalai Lama; an annual Creation Nation Art & Peace Parade now in its 12th year; and a large growing international family of Animodule Sculptures named “Newark’s Official Peace Ambassadors” by US Senator Cory Booker. Applauded by educators, artists, peace activists and thousands of students, Barat Foundation furnishes a voice in the public landscape that promotes diversity, social justice and the healing and peacemaking powers of the arts.   baratfoundation.org
