Artist Statement : Artist Bio Jamarr (J.R.) Neyland is a visual artist based in Jersey City, New Jersey. He grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and received a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Painting at Kent State University. He holds a Master of Science in Education focusing on Childhood Learning and Behavior Disability. He teaches art and social skills to those with Autism at a creative arts therapy center in northern New Jersey. His works consist of mixed media, mainly acrylic and oil, while he also experiments in sculpture and found material. Artist Statement As an African American visual artist, I often create representational images to show the history of my culture and images sparked by my current occupation as an educator. I draw inspiration from diverse sources, incorporating my encounters with people and places. My artistic journey has evolved to explore the theme of memory, particularly those formed during my youth in Ohio. These memories serve as the underpinning of my work, guiding my brush to capture not just moments but the emotional landscapes that define them. Using mixed media such as acrylic and oil, I employ a range of vibrant or subdued tones to convey the emotions of my subjects. Ultimately, my goal is to connect viewers emotionally to the moment or memory depicted in my work.
