Artist Statement : Larica Schnell is a South African artist based in Jersey City. Originally an actor with an MFA in theatre, Larica took up painting in early 2020 during COVID, when theaters were shut down and her energy still needed a creative outlet. Her first artistic foray into the public world was through her fundraising efforts during the Black Lives Matter protests where she sold prints of her #ArtoftheProtest collection, the proceeds for which went to the funding of organizations on the front lines. She's since explored a range of different subjects and media and is currently finding expression through her abstract work with acrylic. But regardless of the medium, her art always aims to capture the worlds that surround her and exist within her - with watercolors of a few of her favorite though oft-forgotten landmarks around Jersey City, and the bursts of acrylic color that speak about the fears, loves, and expectations that have driven her. Though this will be her first open studio in Jersey City, she works with an understanding of story, color, and balance that she's been honing for years.
