Artist Statement : In 2018, after a night of endless doom scrolling, Erik Jacobsen tossed his phone aside and reached for a stack of red paper on his desk. He tore up the pieces to write out the phrase "Stop Comparing Yourself to Everyone Else". After that, Erik was hooked and his studio, Erik's Paper Route, was born. Erik is a paper artist who rips, cuts, and tears paper to shreds to reimagine a world that corresponds to his experiences in the LGBTQIA+ community. His creative process is a therapeutic outlet to express joy, anger, and personal reactions to his surroundings. A lot of his work in this medium relates to connecting with his inner child by demonstrating nostalgia for his early childhood methods to make sense of his current reality as an out gay man today. Erik loves to pull references from pop culture and utilize typography in his work to create new visual narratives. By altering banal logos for everyday items and creating playful compositions with organic forms, he highlights a loss of innocence, bringing social and political issues to light with a mischievous tone. His work was first inspired by the grit of NYC and discarded trash on the ground, and has continued evolving to relate to decaying candy-coated values, American identity, love, and sexuality. Erik is passionate about paper as a medium to express himself--it's layered and imperfect like all of us.
